Melanesian Arts Centre is a retail and wholesale trader in Papua New Guinean artefacts. The company was founded in 1969 by Robin Leahy and has grown to be a successful and highly respected entity in the artefact industry. The integrity and professionalism that Robin established in the artefact industry has earned for Melanesian Arts Centre an enviable reputation for excellence.
Melanesian Arts has been a supplier to collectors, traders, retailers and interior decorators throughout the world.
Robin retired and sold Melanesian Arts Centre in 2003 to new owners and it is now managed by Karen Quinn. Karen arrived in Papua New Guinea from Australia in 1975 and has been very involved in the education industry ever since. Karen developed an early interest in Papua New Guinea art and has a substantial collection of PNG artefacts. The knowledge that she has acquired in her time in PNG has made her uniquely qualified to take over the operation of the business from Robin.
While the company deals in all aspects of traditional and contemporary PNG art and artefacts it has become a specialist in artefacts from the Sepik River and its tributaries, the Lower Ramu River and the Trobriand Islands.
Melanesian Arts Centre operates a large retail outlet in the city of Lae in Morobe Province and from there distributes artefacts to all its overseas customers. This outlet is situated adjacent to the Air Niugini offices near the old Lae airstrip.
The management of Melanesian Arts Centre conduct regular buying expeditions to many areas in Papua New Guinea and has Papua New Guinean artists and traditional carvers who supply artefacts for the tourist and professional collector alike.
